5 Radio Unit, Whitehorse
New webpage on the former 5 Radio Unit, the RCAF (later Supplementary Radio System) intercept site that operated at Whitehorse from 1948 to 1968. Part of Jerry Proc's excellent series on current and former Canadian SIGINT sites.

Can you make any guesses as to what Whitehorse was there to intercept.
I'd say Japanese communications initially including aircraft, shipping and submarines.
I'd assume that shifted to Russian "targets" after the war.
Does that sound right?
Pete
Hi, Pete.
The RCAF intended to open an intercept site at Whitehorse during the Second World War, but the site was not completed before the war ended. When it eventually did open, in 1948, the target was definitely the USSR.
